Always Have a Full Tank with Lakes Gas!
Summer grilling season may be done, but that simply means that tailgate grilling season has begun. Whether you’re cheering for the Vikings, the Packers, or your local high school team, your grill still has a lot of work to do.
Before you can enjoy those burgers and brats, however, you need to make sure your propane grill is ready to go. A crucial part of that setup is safely connecting the propane tank.
This guide will walk you through how to attach a grill tank correctly. We’ll also cover essential safety tips for transporting and storing your propane tanks, ensuring you can grill with confidence and peace of mind.
How to Attach a Grill Tank to Your Propane Grill
Connecting a propane tank might seem intimidating, but it’s a straightforward process when you follow the right steps.
- Ensure the tank valve is closed: Before you begin, check that the handwheel on your propane tank is turned fully clockwise to the “off” position. This prevents any gas from leaking during installation.
- Check for leaks and damage: Inspect the tank, valve, and your grill’s hose connection for any signs of damage, dirt, or debris. A clean connection is a safe connection.
- Position the tank: Place the propane tank into the designated spot on your grill. Most grills have a specific holder or base to keep the tank stable and upright.
- Connect the regulator: Attach the grill’s pressure regulator to the tank valve. The regulator is the part at the end of the hose that screws into the tank. Most modern grills use a threaded coupler that you can tighten by hand. Turn it clockwise until it feels snug. You shouldn’t need any tools for this step; hand-tightening is sufficient.
- Open the tank valve slowly: Once the regulator is securely attached, slowly turn the tank’s handwheel counterclockwise. Opening it too quickly can trigger the grill’s excess flow safety device, which might reduce the gas flow and prevent your grill from heating up properly.
- Perform a leak test: This is a critical safety step. Mix a 50/50 solution of dish soap and water. Brush this solution onto the hose connection at the tank. Open the tank valve and look for any bubbles forming. If you see bubbles, it means gas is leaking. Immediately turn off the tank valve, disconnect the regulator, and reconnect it. Repeat the leak test. If bubbles still form, do not use the grill and contact a professional.
Propane Grill Tank Safety Tips
Your safety doesn’t stop once the tank is connected. Proper handling and storage are just as important.
When you need to refill or exchange your tank, transport it safely:
- Keep it upright: Always transport a propane tank in an upright, secure position. A milk crate or a specialized tank holder can prevent it from tipping over.
- Avoid the car trunk: Place the tank in a well-ventilated area of your vehicle, like the backseat floor, with the windows slightly open. The trunk can trap gas if a leak occurs.
- Go straight to your destination: Don’t leave a propane tank in the car for an extended period. High temperatures can cause the pressure inside the tank to increase to dangerous levels.
Proper storage also keeps your family and property safe:
- Store outdoors: Never store propane tanks indoors, in a garage, basement, carport, sunporch, or shed. Always keep them outside in a shaded, well-ventilated area.
- Keep it upright: Store tanks on a flat, level surface where they won’t be knocked over. Also, keep the tank off the ground, whether on a pallet or on paving, to protect the tank from rusting because of the moisture in the soil.
- Stay away from heat: Keep tanks away from heat sources, including direct sunlight, open flames, and the grill itself when not in use.
Following these safety procedures ensures your grilling experience is enjoyable and worry-free. From connecting the tank to storing it properly, a few simple precautions can make all the difference.
