Lakes Gas in the Illinois counties of DeKalb, McHenry, Ogle, Stephenson, and Winnebago, and the Wisconsin counties of Green, Rock, and Walworth
Before European explorers arrived in the Stateline Region in the 17th century, the area was home to the Menominee, Ojibwe (Chippewa), Potawatomi, and Ho-Chunk (Winnebago) peoples.
Following the French and Indian War and the American Revolution, settlers began to arrive in the area. The initial settlers were largely from New England and New York, many descended from the original Puritan settlers who arrived in New England in the early 17th century.
The settlers were drawn to the area for its many streams and rivers for both water supply and trade, as well as an ample supply of fish and game, and fertile soil for agriculture. This growth was accelerated later in the 19th century by the arrival of the railroad.
Today, the area is part of the greater Chicago and Milwaukee areas and has a wide range of industries.
Proudly serving the Stateline region, Lakes Gas provides dependable propane delivery and service for homes and businesses. Use the form below to get in touch with us!

Lakes Gas, in Laona, WI, provides propane delivery and service to the surrounding communities
Before Europeans arrived, the area that now includes Laona had a rich history as the home of the Potawatomi and Chippewa peoples. Each summer, the region hosted significant porcupine hunts that drew indigenous people from across Northern Wisconsin and Upper Michigan for days of hunting and cooking, followed by nights of feasting and dancing.
The Potawatomi and Chippewa practiced sophisticated hunting techniques. One example is in what is now downtown Laona, where a long brush fence was set with strategically placed openings. It was a way for hunters to make the most of deer drives.
In the fall, wild rice harvests also brought people to the area for more festivals.
Laona had its beginning the way many Wisconsin towns did in the late 19th century — as the result of a railroad.
W. D. Connor, a lumberman and the president of the R. Connor Lumber and Land Company, backpacked about 60 miles north from Gillett, Wisconsin, through the woods, scoping the area out as a potential route for the Chicago and North Western Railway.
He discovered a land rich in not only timber, but rivers and lakes. The woods and water provided a plentiful supply of fish, game and lumber. He found many places that would make great town sites. Connor purchased more than 100,000 acres surrounding what is now Laona.
The town was first settled in 1896 and was established in 1903. It was named for Laona Johnson, the first child born to a settler. Laona was a classic railroad company town, with all major businesses and services built by Connor’s business. Aside from the railroad, Laona’s major industry was the local lumber mill.
Railroad history is still alive in Laona. The town is the home of the Lumberjack Steam Train, which operates a museum and offers rides on its turn-of-the-century passenger train.
Laona is also home to one of Wisconsin’s oldest and best-known snowmobiling trails, the 100 Mile Snow Safari, known among snowmobilers as the 100 Miler. The trail runs largely in undeveloped woods along undeveloped lakes, making it a popular ride.
Since 1959, Lakes Gas has proudly served the Upper Midwest and the communities surrounding our branch locations. Contact us today to learn how we can support your home or business.

Lakes Gas in Marshfield: Serving our neighbors in Wood and Marathon Counties
Development in the part of Wisconsin where Marshfield is located began in the early 19th century. Marshfield was one of the final communities established along what was the Wisconsin Central Railway line, with the first building there being built in 1872. The first industry there was a stave and spoke factory.
William Upham, who would later become Governor of Wisconsin, established a sawmill with a millpond near the railway, later establishing a planning mill, furniture factory, flour and feed mill, and general store to the community.
In 1887, a spark from a passing rail car ignited a fire in the lumberyard at Upham’s sawmill, which quickly spread and destroyed more than 250 buildings. Fortunately, there were no fatalities. Upham later rebuilt his businesses.
The railroad continued to feed Marshfield’s growth. By the later 19th century, it was a major railway hub in the area. Other industries including dairy farming helped Marshfield prosper.
Health care remains an important industry in Marshfield, starting in 1890 when the Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother opened St. Joseph’s Hospital. The hospital also offered health insurance where lumber workers paid a flat rate in exchange for care at St. Joseph’s in the event of an injury.
Early in the 20th century, local doctors formed a group practice known as the Marshfield Clinic. Today, the Marshfield Clinic is an integrated health care system employing more than 1,200 doctors and clinicians and includes a research institute and an education program.
Notable natives and residents of Marshfield include:
- Andrew Rock, a sprinter who won the gold medal in the 4×400 relay in the 2004 Olympics in Athens.
- Jose Pablo Cantillo, actor who has appeared in TV series including Sons of Anarchy and The Walking Dead, as well as films including Cleaner, Crank, and El Chicano.
- Lauren Sesselmann, professional soccer player who also won a bronze medal in the 2012 Olympics as part of the Canadian team.
- Adam Stenavich, offensive coordinator for the Green Bay Packers.
- Charles Werner, editorial cartoonist who won the Pulitzer Prize in 1939.

Lakes Gas in Rosholt: Serving our Roberts County neighbors
The railroad’s arrival into Dakota Territory in the late 19th century led to where towns were located. In 1913, Julius Rosholt of the Fairmount and Veblen (F&V) Railway brought a rail line to the area where South Dakota, North Dakota, and Minnesota meet. The town, named in his honor, was laid out south of the railroad tracks.
Two years later, the F&V Railway was sold to the Minneapolis, St. Paul, and Sault St. Marie Railway, commonly known as the Soo Line. Today, the rail line includes storage and connects with the River Valley & Western Railroad (RRVW) and Dakota Missouri Valley & Western (DMVW) for freight handling and transport.
Rosholt remains a small, friendly town, with more than 400 residents. Nearby, the Wind Vineyard & Winery offers tastings of their handcrafted wines.
Rosholt’s schools are part of the Tri State Tigers Co-op athletics program along with Campbell-Tintah in Minnesota and Fairmount in North Dakota.

Lakes Gas in Baudette, MN: Serving Lake of the Woods County
Baudette is where the Baudette River flows into the Rainy River and is situated along the U.S.-Canadian border. The town was created around the new railroad and was incorporated in 1907. Three years later, a wildfire started in an area filled with logging debris, possibly sparked by a train or a brush fire. Because of the extreme drought in 1910 and heavy winds, the fire quickly spread out of control.
By the end of the day, the fire had destroyed about 400,000 acres and obliterated Baudette, along with the villages of Cedar Spur, Graceton, Pitt, and Spooner. Forty-three people died.
Many Baudette residents were rescued when a boxcar train came across the river from Rainy River, Ont., to take them to safety. That rescue, along with Rainy River residents opening their community and homes to their American neighbors in the aftermath of the fire, forged strong bonds between the communities that remain to this day.
Notable residents and natives of Baudette include:
-
Ted Rowell, a pharmaceutical industrialist, whose Rowell Laboratories made more than 200 products, such as prescription drugs, vitamins, and supplements and was the largest employer in Lake of the Woods County for many years. He went on to serve several terms as mayor of Baudette, during which time a new hospital, sewage plant, international airport, and city well system were built. He was also a key figure in getting a 1,280-foot-long bridge between Baudette and Rainy River built in 1960.
-
Wally Olds, a defenseman who won a silver medal as a member of the 1972 U.S. Olympic hockey team
-
Buffalo Sabres goaltender Alex Lyon, who has also played for the Carolina Hurricanes, Philadelphia Flyers, Florida Panthers, and Detroit Red Wings
-
Former NHL and University of Minnesota defenseman Keith Ballard, who played for the Phoenix Coyotes, Florida Panthers, Vancouver Canucks, and Minnesota Wild

Lakes Gas in Pipestone, MN: Serving Pipestone County and nearby communities
Throughout the Upper Midwest, families and businesses rely on Lakes Gas for the personalized service they want and the dependability they need.
The name “pipestone” comes from the use of the soft stone from the area to make pipes by indigenous people. The stone is also known as catlinite or argillite. Pipestone is considered sacred and is used for ceremonies, prayer, and rites. The pipes are used for healing, peace-making, and more.
The town was initially platted between 1873 and 1874. Pipestone experienced a significant boom from 1883 to 1884 due to the introduction of railroad service and effective land promotion by the South Minnesota Land Company. It was incorporated as a village in 1881, and as a city in 1901. It is the county seat of Pipestone County, which borders South Dakota.
Sioux quartzite is common in the area and was used in the construction of prominent buildings in Pipestone, many of which stand today in the local Historic District and show the skill of the masons as well as area craftsmen who carved relief sculptures onto the stone.
Since 1959, Lakes Gas has been serving the Upper Midwest with pride, supporting the local communities around each of our branch locations. Reach out to discover how Lakes Gas can benefit your home or business!

Lakes Gas in Baraboo, WI, provides propane delivery and service to businesses in Baraboo and the surrounding communities
What is now Baraboo was a Kickapoo village until the late 17th century. It was first settled by Europeans in the 1830s and was called Adams. The city became the county seat of Sauk County in 1856 and changed its name to Baraboo, after the nearby river, in 1852.
Baraboo’s nickname, the Circus City, came about because the Ringling Bros. Circus was established here in 1884 and made this its winter home until 1918. Several other circuses also came here, and Baraboo is proud to now house the Circus World Museum.

Lakes Gas in Kenosha, WI, provides propane delivery and services to area homes and businesses
The name Kenosha is a variation on the original name the Potawatomi gave it, Kenozia. It means “place of the pike,” and came from the fact that the area’s rivers became abundant with northern pike when they swam up the local rivers from Lake Michigan to spawn.
What is now Kenosha was settled by Europeans in the 1830s and was first called Pike Creek, then Southport. As the town became a major Great Lakes port, the name was changed to Kenosha.
The automotive industry was big in Kenosha through the 1980s, as the American Motors Corporation produced many cars here, including the 1983 Motor Trend Car of the Year, the Alliance, built in a partnership with the French automaker Renault.
Being on Lake Michigan, Kenosha offers lots to do on the water, including beachgoing, boating and kayaking, as well as visiting lighthouses, parks and more.
Notable natives and residents of Kenosha include the legendary actor and director Orson Wells (Citizen Kane) and the actors Don Ameche (Cocoon, Trading Places), and Mark Ruffalo (Marvel’s Avengers movies, 13 Going on 30).
