Lakes Gas in Baudette, MN: Serving Lake of the Woods County

Baudette is where the Baudette River flows into the Rainy River and is situated along the U.S.-Canadian border. The town was created around the new railroad and was incorporated in 1907. Three years later, a wildfire started in an area filled with logging debris, possibly sparked by a train or a brush fire. Because of the extreme drought in 1910 and heavy winds, the fire quickly spread out of control.

By the end of the day, the fire had destroyed about 400,000 acres and obliterated Baudette, along with the villages of Cedar Spur, Graceton, Pitt, and Spooner. Forty-three people died.

Many Baudette residents were rescued when a boxcar train came across the river from Rainy River, Ont., to take them to safety. That rescue, along with Rainy River residents opening their community and homes to their American neighbors in the aftermath of the fire, forged strong bonds between the communities that remain to this day.

Notable residents and natives of Baudette include:

• Ted Rowell, a pharmaceutical industrialist, whose Rowell Laboratories made more than 200 products, such as prescription drugs, vitamins, and supplements and was the largest employer in Lake of the Woods County for many years. He went on to serve several terms as mayor of Baudette, during which time a new hospital, sewage plant, international airport, and city well system were built. He was also a key figure in getting a 1,280-foot-long bridge between Baudette and Rainy River built in 1960.
• Wally Olds, a defenseman who won a silver medal as a member of the 1972 U.S. Olympic hockey team
• Buffalo Sabres goaltender Alex Lyon, who has also played for the Carolina Hurricanes, Philadelphia Flyers, Florida Panthers, and Detroit Red Wings
• Former NHL and University of Minnesota defenseman Keith Ballard, who played for the Phoenix Coyotes, Florida Panthers, Vancouver Canucks, and Minnesota Wild
