Lakes Gas in Kenosha, WI, provides propane delivery and services to area homes and businesses

The name Kenosha is a variation on the original name the Potawatomi gave it, Kenozia. It means “place of the pike,” and came from the fact that the area’s rivers became abundant with northern pike when they swam up the local rivers from Lake Michigan to spawn.

What is now Kenosha was settled by Europeans in the 1830s and was first called Pike Creek, then Southport. As the town became a major Great Lakes port, the name was changed to Kenosha.

The automotive industry was big in Kenosha through the 1980s, as the American Motors Corporation produced many cars here, including the 1983 Motor Trend Car of the Year, the Alliance, built in a partnership with the French automaker Renault.

Being on Lake Michigan, Kenosha offers lots to do on the water, including beachgoing, boating and kayaking, as well as visiting lighthouses, parks and more.

Notable natives and residents of Kenosha include the legendary actor and director Orson Wells (Citizen Kane) and the actors Don Ameche (Cocoon, Trading Places), and Mark Ruffalo (Marvel’s Avengers movies, 13 Going on 30).
