Before Europeans arrived, the area that now includes Laona had a rich history as the home of the Potawatomi and Chippewa peoples. Each summer, the region hosted significant porcupine hunts that drew indigenous people from across Northern Wisconsin and Upper Michigan for days of hunting and cooking, followed by nights of feasting and dancing.
The Potawatomi and Chippewa practiced sophisticated hunting techniques. One example is in what is now downtown Laona, where a long brush fence was set with strategically placed openings. It was a way for hunters to make the most of deer drives.
In the fall, wild rice harvests also brought people to the area for more festivals.
Laona had its beginning the way many Wisconsin towns did in the late 19th century — as the result of a railroad.
W. D. Connor, a lumberman and the president of the R. Connor Lumber and Land Company, backpacked about 60 miles north from Gillett, Wisconsin, through the woods, scoping the area out as a potential route for the Chicago and North Western Railway.
He discovered a land rich in not only timber, but rivers and lakes. The woods and water provided a plentiful supply of fish, game and lumber. He found many places that would make great town sites. Connor purchased more than 100,000 acres surrounding what is now Laona.
The town was first settled in 1896 and was established in 1903. It was named for Laona Johnson, the first child born to a settler. Laona was a classic railroad company town, with all major businesses and services built by Connor’s business. Aside from the railroad, Laona’s major industry was the local lumber mill.
Railroad history is still alive in Laona. The town is the home of the Lumberjack Steam Train, which operates a museum and offers rides on its turn-of-the-century passenger train.
Laona is also home to one of Wisconsin’s oldest and best-known snowmobiling trails, the 100 Mile Snow Safari, known among snowmobilers as the 100 Miler. The trail runs largely in undeveloped woods along undeveloped lakes, making it a popular ride.
