Lakes Gas in Marshfield: Serving our neighbors in Wood and Marathon Counties

Development in the part of Wisconsin where Marshfield is located began in the early 19th century. Marshfield was one of the final communities established along what was the Wisconsin Central Railway line, with the first building there being built in 1872. The first industry there was a stave and spoke factory.

William Upham, who would later become Governor of Wisconsin, established a sawmill with a millpond near the railway, later establishing a planning mill, furniture factory, flour and feed mill, and general store to the community.

In 1887, a spark from a passing rail car ignited a fire in the lumberyard at Upham’s sawmill, which quickly spread and destroyed more than 250 buildings. Fortunately, there were no fatalities. Upham later rebuilt his businesses.

The railroad continued to feed Marshfield’s growth. By the later 19th century, it was a major railway hub in the area. Other industries including dairy farming helped Marshfield prosper.

Health care remains an important industry in Marshfield, starting in 1890 when the Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother opened St. Joseph’s Hospital. The hospital also offered health insurance where lumber workers paid a flat rate in exchange for care at St. Joseph’s in the event of an injury.

Early in the 20th century, local doctors formed a group practice known as the Marshfield Clinic. Today, the Marshfield Clinic is an integrated health care system employing more than 1,200 doctors and clinicians and includes a research institute and an education program.
