Storing Your GrillBaby, it’s cold outside. And your grill probably won’t be making an appearance for several months. Before you put it away, read these tips from Angie’s List.

Heat it
It sounds counterproductive, but before you pack your grill away, you first need to fire it up. Get it as hot as you can. After about 20 minutes, you’ll be able to easily scrape up any gunk that accumulated over the summer with a wire brush. Let it cool completely and check the straps and grill cover. If it’s damaged, replace it with a new one to keep moisture out during the winter.

Dismantle it
We don’t mean completely- just remove grill plates, drip pans, grease trays and other parts and clean them with soap and water. Consult your owner’s manual first, as some parts may require you to use special cleaning products.

Clean it
Don’t forget the outside! Give that a good cleaning and pay special attention to the hood cover and propane tank. Clean out the underside of the hood, which will likely have a thick coating of black carbon. It takes some hard work, but while you’re at it, you might as well go for broke.

Store it
Once it’s all clean, reassemble it and fire it up. Test to make sure all the burners work. Keep it running for a couple minutes to burn off excess water from your cleanup. Let it cool, disconnect it and store the tank separately from the grill. It’s best to store the grill in a garage or shed, but if you have to keep it outside, make sure the cover it secured to keep moisture out.

And don’t worry, outdoor grilling season will be back before you know it.
