Like many cities in the Upper Midwest, Adrian got its start thanks to a railroad. Adrian was established in 1876 as an expansion of the St. Paul-Dakota Railroad and was named in honor of Adrian Iselin, the mother of one of the railroad company’s directors.
Adrian’s growth was accelerated by St. Paul Diocese Bishop John Ireland, who used his own wealth to purchase about 55,000 acres of land. He then used the Catholic press to encourage Catholics in the east to settle in Adrian.
